Why your Google Business Profile is quietly costing you customers

Talon AI Marketing · July 2026 · 4 min read

Your Google Business Profile is probably the most-viewed page about your business on the internet — more than your website, more than your social pages. And most local businesses treat it like a phone-book entry from 2009: claimed once, filled in halfway, never touched again.

46%

of all Google searches are local — people looking for a business, product, or service near them, right now.

That's not a marketing-channel statistic. That's half of Google being people trying to find someone like you. And the profile is what Google shows them first — before your website, before your ads.

62%

of consumers will skip a business entirely if they can't find it online.

The failure mode isn't "no profile." It's "a profile that loses the comparison."

When someone searches "dentist near me" or "brake repair," Google shows a map pack of three businesses. The searcher makes a decision in seconds based on what's visible: rating, photo quality, whether the hours look current, whether anyone answered the questions, how recent the last update is. A half-finished profile doesn't look neutral — next to a well-run one, it looks closed.

Ten minutes of fixes that actually move the needle

  1. Categories, primary and secondary. The single strongest signal you control. Be precise — "Cosmetic dentist," not just "Dentist," if that's the work you want.
  2. Real photos, dated this year. Interior, exterior, team, work product. Stock photos read as stock from across the room.
  3. Hours that are actually true — including holidays. One "arrived at 9, door locked" review outweighs ten good ones.
  4. Answer your Q&A section. Anyone can post a question on your profile, and anyone can answer it. If you don't, a stranger's guess becomes your official answer.
  5. Respond to every review — the bad ones with more care than the good ones. Prospects read the responses to see who they'd be dealing with.
  6. Post something monthly. An offer, a finished job, a team note. Activity signals a business that's alive.

The part nobody tells you

A great profile makes the phone ring — and then the ordinary failure mode takes over: the call goes to voicemail, the message sits until tomorrow. Visibility work and response work are the same pipeline, and the pipeline is only as good as its slowest stage. Fix the profile, then make sure something actually answers. (We wrote up what slow response costs, with the research attached.)
